A History of American Archaeology provides a history of the development of the discipline of archaeology as it has been, and is being, practiced in the Americas. The contents are broken down into these periods: TheS peculative Period (1492-1840); Classificatory-Descriptive Period (1840-1914); The Classifcatory-Historical Period: The Concern with Chronology (1914-1940); The Classificatory-Historical Period: The Concern with Context and Function (1940-1960); and the Explanatory Period (1960-- ). Under these Periods various subjects are found such as: Indian origins, explorers, archaeological research, typology and artifact classification. settlement patterns, and culture and environment.
