History of the Expedition under the command of Lewis and Clark, Vol. 3Description
History of the Expedition under the command of Lewis and Clark was formerly 4 volumes, but is now 3 volumes. Vol. 3 contains these subjects: Botany and Zoology; other rivers in what is now Washington and Oregon, and exploration of previously seen areas on the return trip to St. Louis. Starts at page 821
The set contains original manuscript journals and field notebooks of the explorers as summarized by Nocolas Biddle in the original 4-volume set and now condensed into a 3-volume set by Elliot Coues. The books tell of encounters with dozens of Indian tribes, descriptions of their political and social organization, dress, living habits and ways; personal anecdotes of courage and stamina; and vivid descriptions of staggering natural wonders that no white man had ever seen. This set is from the Don Reynolds collection.
Originally published in 1893. Includes an appendix with essay on Indian policy, estimate of Western Indians, summary statement, and meteorlogical register.
