Legend: "Hollenberg (Cottonwood). This building, erected from native lumber by G. H. Hollenberg near Cottonwood Creek alongside the Oregon Trail in 1857, was the first house constructed in Washington County, Kansas. It and the surrounding ranch served as a trading station and camping area for wagon trains and Overland Trail travelers. In April, 1860, it became a station for the Pony Express and in 1861 was used by Ben Holladay's stage line. Still standing, practically unaltered, it is now owned by the State of Kansas and is a museum. Two miles east of Hanover, Kansas."
