Description

Home for the Mind Diseased, History of St. Joseph's State Hospital No. 2. A short history of the St. Joseph State Hospital No. 2, a state mental hospital existing from 1874-1997. It was located on a large campus at 36th & Frederick Avenue. Obsolete, in St. Joseph, MO. The book is dedicated to George Glore, who founded the Glore Psychiatric Museum. The St. Joseph State Hospital No. 2 housed over 2000 patients. Included are black & white photos of patients, staff, and rooms as they appeared during its more than 130-year history. In 1997, the hospital was abandoned and a new facility, the Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center, opened on state land across the street from the original campus. The information in the book basically comes from an Annual Report to the State. It is divided into sections by date: 1874-1889; 1890-1907; 1907-1930;1930-1945; 1946-1997. Superintendents of the hospital are described along with their achievements and changes to mental health treatment under their management. The fire of 1879 is discussed as is the operation of the hospital farms and the work and occupation therapy provided to patients. 24/Softbound/Photographs
