How They Adorn Themselves.
God moves in mysterious way. His wonders to perform. It is universally acknowledged that in no other way is the truth of this assertion so beautifully exemplified as in the case of the daughters of Eve, who from the time of our first vague knowledge of them in the dawnings of history, have been fulfilling a destiny and accomplishing however unwittingly, the ends for which their ancestress was evolved from the rib of our first ancestor.
When Eve was moved to adorn herself with fig leaves-being not yet sufficinntly sophisticated to send Adam after feathers, if there were any,- she little dreamed, nor did her better half, that she was chosen instrument in the hands of Providence to further a divine plan to develop, through the sweat of her lord and master's brow, the natural resources of the world to which he had fallen heir.
Had Adam continued his desultory labors in that fertile valley, under the especial care of an indulgent Providence, Eve would have been spared his moans of reproach and self-pity that still echo down the ages, but her gain in that respect would have been our loss in all others, as we can easily surmise what would and the flesh, had Adam and his successors been spared the spur of necessity, and of Eve.
It is conceivable that Eve's first expressed wish was for an improvement on fig leaves, and in the course of time some discontented daughter of hers became obsessed by the inspiration of the feather.Lexicon
