Description

Original Catalogit entry labeled "BOX" with the description of "UNOPENED". Box lid is labeled: VANDRILL 23PL3 PEPPER Inside the box is a hand drawn map, a diary entry describing the events of October 23, 1941, two small pieces of paper, 7 pottery sherds (two painted body sherds, two undecorated rim sherds, 3 undecorated body sherds), three sandstone fragments, and a small box containing human remains. This smaller box is labeled: From Renner Earth Mound, 23PL3 Excavated by Mett Shippee in 1920, the same time as the mandible with the dental pearl on the 2nd molar on right side. May, 1920 Evart Sothian (?) The mound had never been dug. Chas, Shippee, John Murphy were watching the digging. According to the handwritten note/diary entry, the pottery sherds were likely found on top of the mound and the remains were washed out of the mound. In the box with the remains are multiple iron fragments. Some of the bones are discolored because of proximity to the iron. Bones present are mostly juvenile, likely infant, which include skull fragments, a clavicle, several rib fragments, two long bones (likely femur and tibia), unfused vertebral bodies, a broken vertebral spinous process + part of lamina, unfused lamina, two adult teeth (a premolar and canine), and several unidentifiable fragments.

Visited Vandrell farm with Dr. Felling and Leon Hillix East of Iatan. Small Hopewellian site with much shell in midden east of the forks of Mission Cr on Vandrell farm (see sherds in this box) West of house, flint artifacts and a few sherds of Miss. pattern are found. To the west of this house is Peppers house 1/4 mile where in the back yard is a mound containing much stone and burials washing out. A few miss-pattern sherds were picked up on surface of mound. Under the mound a storm cellar has been built with a vent up thru the center of the mound. To the SW is a terrace near a large farm in the valley which will bear investigation.
