Description

Circa 1942 OWEN HENSON HY-KLAS #14 Circa 1947 ANDERSON HOLADAY HY-KLAS #14 Circa 1960 CHAPMAN THRIFTEE 2001 Messanie This was a fun challenge figuring this one out. Susan Angell sent me via email 2 photos, wanting to know what the name of the grocery store was in the background of the 2 photos. In 1947-1948, Susan's mother, Emma Overton, took the photos of her friends standing at an unknown location. Susan stated that her mother and the girls attended Central High School, so that narrowed the field down. After researching several possible locations, John Fulmer figured out the location where Susan's mother was standing when taking these photos. The girls are standing on the southwest corner of Warsaw and Messanie Street. The wall in the background is the old St Peter & Paul church's wall. The small wall on the right side belongs to a yard at that location. It was determined the store in the background was located at 20th & Messanie. Owen Henson Hy-Klas #14 is listed in the 1942 city directory with that address. I received an email from Dale Holaday, son of the Holadays, along with 3 photos. Anderson (Andy) and Marie Holaday purchased the store from the Hensons in 1944. The Holaday family managed the business until 1957 when they sold it to the Chapmans. In 1957, it became Chapman Thriftee. Following Mr Chapman's death in 1967, Mrs Chapman sold the building and it was subsequently torn down. The old East Side Human Resource Center building now stands at that location. East Side Human Resource Center has moved to 18th & Sylvanie
