Illustrated London News: Pony Express, St. Joseph, News Story, November 16, 1861 with new sketches.
In this edition they give a view of the town of St. Joseph, Missouri, the eastern terminus of the arrival and departure of the great overland traffic to and from the eastern and western territories. The sketch is taken from the landing-place on the Kansas shore, near the town of Pembroke, where a steam-ferry exists, by which means the coaches, wagons, are carried across the waters of the Missouri.
St. Joseph called St. Joe is a quaint and curious town, though so new, it full of interest; like all newly-born American cities. The land is laid out in square blocks.
St Joseph can boast of some good shops. The Patee House affords a comfortable accommodation and entertainment.
At this time it is now threatened by the Confederate forces, and hear any day of the place being taken by a coop de main.
The most interesting feature about St. Joe arises from the fact of its being the principal point to departure and arrival for the trains or wagons going or returning from the overland passage to California or Oregon.
In the account of the Pony Express it was mentioned that the firm of Russel, Majors and Company who were the proprietors of the Pony Express also are carriers of goods and passengers.Lexicon
