In the Old West,, As It Was in the Days of Kit Carson and the Mountain Men. This is a generalized history of the old west during the time of the fur traders and first pioneers across the trails. Many of the adventures and people presented are true, and Ruxton himself ventured over parts of the Santa Fe Trail. The original work was published in the 1840's and excited the imagination of later pioneer travelers.
he introduction is 24 pages long in which the scene is set for the story. It starts with the Lousiana Purchase which was made to forestall complications with foreign powers. It was also essential to free navigation of the Mississippi River. "Aside from its strategic importance, no one knew what it was good for." So Lewis and Clark were sent out to find a route to the Pacific Ocean and to report what the new country was like. The only commercial asset they found was fur-bearing animals. The author's stories are not history, exactly, but neither is it fiction. He spent much time in travel and research. So the scene is set for this story of hunters, trappers and fur trading and the old west.
