Indian & Eskimo Artifacts of North America. Written by Charles Miles.
Jacket Book description:
In this primarily pictorial guide with explanatory captions, Charles Miles has organized photographs over two thousand examples of all of the major kinds of North American native-made and -used artifacts, and presents them under several functional headings.
Tools, weapons, pottery, basketry, clothing, boats, and ceremonial regalia are shown, often in close-ups which present technical details of manufacture rarely found in books on this subject.
The daily life of the pre-Columbians and their descendants men who spoke some two hundred languages and lived in eight major culture areas, is vividly described. The approach is informal, with the author's witty style making simple artifacts noteworthy - as when he observes "All pre-Columbians use hammers in various forms to pound food, stakes, wedges, chisels, stones, and other pre-Columbians..."
The recently discovered Columbia River art objects are amply illustrated, as are sense of Eskimo life engraved on ivory, gambling sticks and dice, jewlerlry, and such fascinating oddities as seal scratchers. Mr. Miles relates that these were used by Eskimos to scratch on ice, causing seals under the ice to "think there was 'company' overhead. They were equipped with real seal claws."
