L1961.1.3Description
Indian Journals 1859-62 is a panorama of the American West. In May 1859 , on the eve of the Civil War, Lewis Henry Morgan left his home in Rochester, New York, and set out for the the Plains. By steamboat, stagecoach, horseback and on foot, he traveled through the Nebraska and Kansas Territories. Down the Red River of the North into the Hudson Bay area, and up the Missouri River to the Rockies, he wrote his journal, a vivid first-hand account of life on the American frontier, and it is a trenchant description of the white man's ways in dealing with the American Indian.
