Description

Indians of the United States has a subtitle, Four Centuries of Their History and Culture. The first Indians crossed from Siberia to Alaska ten thousand years before 1492, The fateful four centuries which saw the American Indian at the height of his strength and culture and at the depths of his humiliation are the subject of this definitive book. Dr. Wissler portrays the struggle of the Indians to resist the advancing frontier, describes their mode of life and its modifications that are the result of residing among white people, and finally gives some account of the Indian personalities of the time. This interpretation does not conclude with the subjugation of the Indians by the white man, but understandingly describes the way the Indians now live, their contributions to our culture and their role in our future. An appendix and an index is included. Dr. Wissler is the curator of Anthropology, American Museum of Natural History. This book is from the Don Reynolds collection. 319/Hardbound/Illustrations/Maps
