Description

It Pays Me Well and Is a Good Thing: The Club Life of Constance Runcie, an article in the Journal of the Missouri Historical Society, "Gateway Heritage", Winter, 1994-1995, pp.56-65. This article is a short biography of the life of Constance Fauntleroy Runcie who founded the local St. Joseph's women's club, Runcie Club in 1984. This club, originally focused on arts and cultural areas, eventually embraced community improvement activities. As a single woman, Runcie had begun a club for single women in New Harmony, IN, and later lived in Madison Indiana with her clergyman husband. She came in St. Joseph in its most prosperous period, 1871. The Runcie Club dues became her source of income when her husband died. During that era, it was not socially acceptable for women to work outside the home. Runcie published poems, essays, and music written by herself and other members. The Runcie Club survives to this day. 10/Photocopied pages/Photographs.
