Ivory Bill Woodpecker Expedition by SJM Staff Big Bend National Park, Texas Maps, c. 1963. Nine maps collected by Roy Coy, St. Joseph Museum Director and Rich Nolf, who would later become Director.
In the 1960s there was rumor that the Ivory Bill Woodpecker, once thought extinct, was thought to be living in the Big Bend area. Being naturalists, these two men went in hopes of sighting one--which they did not. (No one as seen this bird since 1944). However, they did make a video of their trip and used it in Museum programs. That video should still be in the files of the Museum. (Although it is not in the Archives).
