Jackson, Clairbone F. Governor of Missouri, Photo, 1861. b/w. Photo of a portrait of Governor Jackson, who was elected governor in 1860 just prior to Civil War. Head/shoulders view of man in mid-life, with longish dark, wavy hair, receding hairline, clean shaven, wearing dark 3-piece suit and bow tie.
Jackson was southern in sympathy and after his "Jackson Guards" as Missouri State Guards caused an incident in St. Louis and Jackson's refusal to negotiate with Union Generals, Lincoln sent Federal troops to Missouri. As they approached Jefferson City, Jackson and many in the state legislature fled and lived the rest of the Civil War in exile in Texas. The state convention removed Jackson from office and installed Harold Gamble as provisional governor.
