Scope and Content

Jackson, Dee Ann St. Joseph News-Press February 6, 2011 is an article titled Keeping History Alive. The story is about Dee Ann Jackson of St. Joseph, Missouri as she continues her mother's scrapbooks of Newspaper clippings that highlight local black history. Clara Jackson began clipping history as early as the 1970's Dee Ann's picture also appears in the article. The scrapbooks tell the story of the local black community through features, obituaries, commentaries, and arrests. One of the reasons for the scrapbook is to let people know, there are things in there we should always remember. It showed what really took place here and that in the future our young people will look back and see that and just be awed by it. Dee Ann's mother continued this hobby until 1990 when she became too ill to keep up this endeavor. Dee Ann states the books are not fancy, but in them are a lot of history. Ms. Jackson has been asked many times to display her scrapbooks publicly but she is reluctant to do so because she doesn't want to offend anyone. Sometimes people don't want to be reminded of sad issues and she does respect that.
