Scope and Content

Jackson, Henry St. Joseph News-Press February 26, 2006 Henry Jackson was paid tribute as a local black leader. He was the first black News-Press editorial employee. When the St. Joseph native Henry Jackson took a job as a copy boy at the News-Press in 1969 , only one other black person worked at the paper. That person was a janitor whose name Mr. Jackson can't recall. After a few months, then editor Merrill Chilcote gave the 19- year old Mr. Jackson a golden opportunity. This opportunity was to become a photojournalist. After leaving the News-Press in 1972 he took a position as a photographer and columnist for the Oklahoma Eagle, a black-owned newspaper in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He currently works as a freelance photographer in St. Paul Minnesota.
