Jailer's Job St. Joseph News-Press, 1943?
Jailer's Job is an unceasing battle with desperate men who long for freedom. Most recent case is only one of many tried here.
Newspaper photo: Former jail. This was the Buchanan County jail that was replaced 36 years ago by the present structure.
The above jail was constructed before the Civil War and from it some sensational escapes were made. In the picture the jail appears to have a tower. That however, is the old dome of the courthouse, which was just south of the jail.
When Buchanan County erected its present jail 34 years ago its officials had the assurance of the company that installed the steel interior--cells, tiers and locking mechanism--that the structure was escape proof. Apparently the officials accepted that word. Many men who since have been locked in the jail didn't. Those men have found a variety of different ways in which to escape.
Newspaper photo: Marines on Marshall Isles. Never trust a Jap-- Not even a Dead One--Marines, only too bitterly familiar with the Jap habit of playing dead and then coming alive with a hand grenade, have rifles ready as they investigate every enemy body on Roi air field in the Marshalls.
