Photo of a letter written by the daughter of the landlord of 1318 Lafayette Street, the home in St. Joseph Jesse James rented under the name Tom Howard. She is authenticating presenting the actual floorboards she gave to St. Joseph Museum, claiming them to be where Jesse's head came to rest after he was shot. See 538/17574, 1-6 for boards.
"The undersigned is presenting to the St. Joseph Museum, at actual boards from the home of Jesse James. It was on these boards that Jesse's head rested after he was shot by Robert Ford on April 3, 1882.
The undersigned's mother owned the home and was renting it to Jesse James, under the name of Thomas Howard at the time the outlaw was killed.
My mother removed these boards shortly after the killing because souvenir hunters were cutting holes in the floor. These boards have been in my possession until now. I am presenting the boards on October 12, 1955, to the St. Joseph, Museums.
Signed: Mrs. Rose M. Gernaudt, October 12, 1955."
