James, Jesse, as Teen, Sketch by Harry Wright from photo, c. 1862 b/w. Copy of sketch pencil drawing made by SJM staff artist, Harry Wright for the cover of Museum Graphic, Spring, 1957, Vol. IX, No. II. Based on copy of photo in the collection of Library of Congress. (see 92.1H.75 for photo). Two copies numbered #73 & #74.
Jesse as very young man, perhaps still in his teens. Said to be taken during the Civil War. He's wearing a lop-sided hat, a ribbon bow tie around a white shirt. His scoop-necked over-blouse has a large pocket. He is holding a gun pointed down at his wrist.
The photo image from Library of Congress is a reproduction of an ambrotype. The original ambrotype was a reversed image, making it appear that Jesse James was left-handed, which he was not.Lexicon
