Description

James, Jesse, in Coffin Surrounded by Lawmen, A.A. Hughes Stereo Photo, 1882. b/w. Photo of Jesse James laying in a coffin, a white sheet pulled over his body. Four men, one almost out of picture on left, are standing at his coffin. Presumably these are lawmen. Photographer printed on side: "Copyright applied for, A.A. Hughes, Blanchard, Iowa." (This photo published in "Jesse and Frank James, a Family History" by Steele, 1987 suggests that the gentlemen in center is Marshall Enos Craig and that the body is packed on ice and on display in St. Joseph. Others suggest that because the photographer was from Blanchard, Iowa, this photo was taken later at the James Farm in Kearney before his burial there.) Stereoptician slide, original in Library of Congress. Original digital scan located on History CD 02.
