Description

Joe Meek The Merry Mountain Man offers the description of Joe Meek as trapper, Indian fighter, pioneer, peace officer, and frontier politician. In 1829 Joe joined the Rocky Mountain Fur Company and headed west on an odyssey unique in its combination of high adventure and hilarious low comedy. For the next twelve years the Rockies rang with the tales of Joe's wild expotis as trapper, jester, ladies' man and student of the "Rocky Mountain College" (unaccredited). When the beaver trade played out, he helped drive the first wagons to Oregon where he served in the legislature and went to Washington as a special envoy to President Polk. In 1849 he returned to Oregon with a commission as U.S. Marshall, and lived out his days defending the community which he had helped to build. It was first published in 1952 by Caxton Printers 336/Softbound/Illustrations/Photographs.
