L1963.1.21Description
Kansas in Newspapers. This is a collection of newsworthy articles from many of the early newspapers in Kansas. Early journalist, Henry King, stated in 1906 that Kanas is perhaps the only place on the face of the earth of which it has been said that a newspaper was started before there was any news to print. He was referring to the Kansas Weekly Herald whose first issue was published at Leavenworth, September 15, 1854. It has been said that Kansas has had more newspapers per capita than any other state. In the early days, it was a rare town that did not have its own paper. A lengthy introduction prefaces excerpts from many of the early Kansas newspapers.
