Description
Kennekuk Pony Express Station Marker, Photo, 1959. b/w photo of rider on horse stopped near a boulder. "Caption: Kennekuk Station. A boulder under a walnut shade tree marks a now quiet place that was named after Chief Kennekuk of the Kickapoo Trible. At the time of the Pony Express there was much activity at this spot near which the Leavenworth to Fort Kearney Military road joined the St. Jo Road. Modern-day riders can only imagine the stage and wagon traffic and where hotels, stores and a blacksmith shop stood. The Pony Express stop is thought to have been adjacent to the Baldwin House. Major Royal Baldwin was the Kickapoo tribe's Indian Agent. (Kennekuk is south of Horton, Kan.)" b/w, rider unidentified.
