Description

Kickapoo Chief, Commodore Cat, and other Native Americans with Louisa Hauck Photo, 1923. b/w. Five Native Americans meeting with whitle woman in light-colored dress & hat. Commodore Cat, Chief of the 290-member Kickapoo tribe is pictured in the center, wrapped in blanket, wearing full headdress. A brave in light-colored costume appears out in front of the Chief and seems to be central to the photo. Four other Native Americans in ceremonial dress make up the group. Woman is Louis Platt Hauck, writer of Pony Express Pageant, who met with the Kickapoo to enlist their participation in the pageant celebration. This is news photo from Aug. 11, 1923 News Press. Headline: "Mrs. Leslie Hauck Received by the Kickapoos" Caption: Author of Pony Express pageant heads committee on visit to reservation to engage redmen for spectacle at St. Joseph beginning August 27." Accompanying story places the photo near Powhattan, KS. The Chief, about 60 years old, spoke no English. The story indicated that the Kickapoo donned their ceremonial dress for Mrs. Hauck on the spot. It identified the other Kickapoo as Johnny Cadue, Leroy Commodore (only son of the chief), Chief Commodore Cat, Wm. Sacquat, and David Louis. For Original digital scan see History 20 CD
