Scope and Content

Honored Name, 1958. This newspaper article is about naming the new North Side swimming pool after the Krug family. In 1880 Henry Krug St. and his brother, William, deeded 32 acres to the city, the original area of Krug Park, In 1914 Henry Krug Jr. gave 32 additional acres. Among the preparations for the opening of Krug Park Bowl was a new road within the park. That was in 1928 preceding the presentation of the Passion Play from Freiburg, Germany. The park board had asked for 6.54 more acres for the added driveway. Mr. Krug Jr. gave the portion needed. Eight years later Mr. Krug Jr. exceeded the total of all previous gifts to the park. He presented 100 acres more to the park. Practically all of that donated area is now in woodland to the west of the park. It extends nearly to the waterworks. The park board, handicapped by lack of sufficient funds to maintain its present acreage, has not been able to develop this portion. But it remains a tract of great natural beauty for future use. The donors have passed to their rewards, But St. Joseph owes special honor to their descendants. These are Raymond Krug, Mrs. Benton M. Calkins Sr., her children Benton M. Calkins Jr. and Mrs. William M. Kimberlin and their children, Benton M. Calkins III and Jeremiah E. K. Reeves.
