A three-page letter from Alice Palmer Henderson to Harry George discussing a friend's collection of Alaskan baskets and its price.Vol 1 P. 185A
Dear Sir:
Some years ago I ???? an account of your baskets
and today happened upon it. You may have remembered,
a hundred things may have happened, still I write.
A friend of mine an army officer widow has a collection
of about fifty, forty-nine or so which she is eager to sell since she is in sad
need of money. Her husband was of high rank and they picked their baskets
up in Alaska nearly 25 years ago. They are of very fine weave and unusual
design, since being stationed there, they have many to choose from. They were
made by the oldest of the squaws, all now dead. Tho just upon the war ended them.
Most of the baskets are large. All are of vegetable ????. She sent me a good
photo which shown designs plainly. I will send this if you are still there and
wish to embrace this really last opportunity.
They are eighteen hundred dollars ($1800)?????, express C. O. D.
They are very beautiful . If you don't wish them will you kindly mail
the same me ??? night? Her need is real, the price low, chance good.
I myself know those things since I served upon the jury
of ethnology both at the Columbian and L. P. expositions and have
the finest private Eskimo and Indian opened collection that
I know. It crowd an entire hall in the State Historical Museum
here. Hoping to hear soon and favorably.Subject
