Description

Vol II pg. 9A Letter from Francis LaFlesche to Harry George providing information about George's Osage Life Stick. 214 First Street S.E. Washington, D.C. October 7, 1916 Mr. Harry L. George. St. Joseph, Mo. Dear Sir: In your letter to me of June 26, 1916, you asked me for the interpretation of the Counting Stick that I have, in order that you might not be left entirely in the dark as to the meaning of your “Osage Life Stick,” I am now sending you the interpretation of the Counting stick as given me by an osage three or four years ago, which will give you an idea as to the meaning of the one that you have. You will notice that I give to the one that I have, the title of, “Counting Stick,” which it really is. The title given by your informant, “Life Stick,” sounds big but it is far from the true meaning. I call your attention to this as you seem to be in earnest in your desire to get, as near as you can, to the true meaning of the specimens that you collect. I expect to be in Sioux City in the latter part of this month to the middle of November and if you happen to be in that city during that time, I wish you would inquire for me, at my nephew’s office, Mr. Carl E. Farley, 508, 5th Street. I shall be visiting him during my stay out there. Yours truly, Francis LaFlesche
