Description

A typed 2-page letter from Grace Nicholson to Harry George discussing baskets she is sending for his approval. Vol II pg. 44B April 17th, 1910. Mr. Harry L. George, St Joseph, Missouri, Dear Mr. George, I have your favor of the 19th instant and hasten to assure you that never for one moment have I neglected your valued order. Just as soon as I received your list of Baskets I immediately placed aside 56 Baskets which I thought you would want, among others a beautiful old specimen of Yurok Dance Basket, also one of the Hupa Dance Baskets; specimens of which you specially mention in your letter of later date, and, altho I could have disposed of these Baskets a number of times, and also a number of the balance which I selected for you, I have refused to sell them until I am satisfied that you did not care for them. In every line my business has been double this season and I have been more than busy: at the same time I have been obliged to finish completet catalog and data on 1135 Eskimo specimens that I ma loaning the Dept. of the Interior for the government Exhibit in the Alasan Building at Seattle. This meant night work until Thursday of last week and the entire collection is to be shipped Tuesday. This work finished I am at liberty to take up your matter without delay. H.L.G. #2 Therefore in order to save time I will express you this week 75 or 80 Baskets. After looking these over carefully you can make your selections and sending me the numbers on the tags I will then forward the information I have with regard to the particular Baskets. My work for the last five years collecting especially for the Peabody Museum at Cambridge, Mass., to whom I have sent thousands of specimens, besides the hundreds of other specimens sent to other Museums, ought to prove to you that I am not in the class to which you refer in the following paragraph: – “This is particularly true from people like yourself who are in the business and who know little about what they are offering for sale.” I assure you that the information that I will give you will be as full as it is possible for anyone to supply and will be absolutely correct, as a result of years of study and personal contact with Indians of nearly every tribe from Alaska to old Mexico. Thanking you for your patience and assuring you that now that I know you have made ready for the collection I will send specimens at once. Very truly yours, Grace Nicholson
