Description

Vol II pg. 106M Letter from Harry George to the Mohonk Lodge regarding receipt of the baby carrier, questions as to who made it, and his interest in baskets. 1/30/09 The beaded baby carrier arrived yesterday and is entirely satisfactory. However I would have preferred it to have been a little bit different from what it is for the reason I have a Sioux baby carrier, mounted in the same way which looks very much like it. Upon the string tag attached to the same I find some writing. On one side - “Hoitzio”, on the other side “Mrs. American Horse.” Please let me know if this is the Indian name as well as the English name of the squaw who owned this carrier. Several weeks ago an Indian by the name of American Horse died. It is possible this is the same one referred to in the meagre description that is given on the baby carrier. I would like to know further about this so I can correctly mark it. I wrote you a few days ago in regard to other matters, concerning which, at your convenience, would be very glad to hear from you. Let me know what makes of baskets you now have and what you may be able to supply through your field agent. There may be something I need to complete my general collection Yours very truly, 95¢ and $1.30 you have some styles of shapes I would like to have therefore I would be glad to have you set them aside until an answer it received to the letter which I wrote you on the 26th. When it is determined as to wheter you can furnish what I then asked for I will know about the Chetimache which is referred to in this letter. In answering this letter please state briefly what you can or are likely to be able to furnish in Indian baskets. Give me the names and that will answer, or if I desire further information I will let you know.
