Letter from the Mohonk Lodge to Harry George regarding the tribes they are in contact with and the various baskets and beadwork they make.
May 19, 1911.
Mr. Harry L. George,
Saint Joseph, Missouri.
Dear Sir; -
Yours of the 15th inst received and in reply will say; we come in contact with the Caddo, Wichita, Kiowa, Comanche, Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Mescalero Apache, Ft. Sill (Chiricahua) Apache Indians, but only the Apaches are basket makers so far as we know. It is true that the Plains Indians made a rough gambling basket, and the Wichitas made a kind of grass mat, but with these exceptions, we know of no basket they made. We think you have one of the Ft. Sill Apache baskets, but do not remember if we sent you any of the Mescalero plaques which are very pretty. All of these Indians do beadwork, but with the exception of that made by the Cheyennes and Arapahoes it is all done with thread. That made by the Caddoes and Wichitas is very similar and can only be detected by an expert.
Hoping to be favored with your valued commissions and assuring you they shall have our most careful attention, we remain
Sincerely yours,
The Mohonk Lodge,
