Description

A letter to Sara Emery McIlhenny from Harry George discussing a collection of Native American basket work. Undated. Vol II pg. 102U I now have in my collection of this class of work Chetimaches, what I would call Attakapa, Choctaw and Cherokee, all made from cane, and so far as I can see my collection of cane work is complete. For a long time past my desire has been to make up a miscellaneous, representative collection of Indian basket work, not having more than one or two pieces of each tribes work. I have not always been successful in doing this but in the main, have followed out this line of policy. The explanation you make in your letter clear up the question as to the work of the two Indian tribes given to the state of Louisiana, the Chetimaches and the Attakapa, and I feel sure I have what might be called a specimen of each tribes work. The statement made by you that the two tribes mentioned are different from a linguistic standpoint, bears out what the government officials have to say about the same. The Attakapas are given as belonging to the Attakapan family and the Chetimaches the Chetimachan family both of Louisiana. I will be glad to aid you in any way I possibly can in your endeavor to sell the work of the Indians under your care, and a little later may be able to send you an order for my collection. Just at the present time I have everything I need except what is called the trunk shapes. Yours very truly,
