Scope and Content

A copy of a letter, on onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to H. P. Olmo, Professor of Viticulture, University of California, Davis, dated January 12, 1976. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the paper.

Context

Dear Dr. Olmo: This is my annual progress report on the T8-43 and Sereksia in Northwest Missouri. The winter of 1974 and 75 was not very severe, so that the wood above ground was not killed by the cold weather. Since there had out been much growth during the summer of 74 I trimmed them back to where the wood was good. The enclosed photographs were taken about the first of October this year, and show the growth that was obtained during the summer. #1. This is a photograph of the T8-43, the best plant of course and I now have 5 plants surviving out of the 6 that were planted in 1973. #2. This is a photograph of the Sereksia, 2 of which now survive out of the 3 that were planted in 1973. I am sending along 2 additional photographs of Ruby Cabernet which were grafted on Baco #1 roots. Photograph #3 was wedge grafted at the ground level on Baco #1 roots in 1966. Over the years the wood above ground has been winter killed, but there always seem to be a few buds at the base of the stalk that have been viable. This is one of 2 plants that survived the cold weather of January, 1974 at which time it was below zero every night . . . . Film #4 is of Ruby Cabernet grafted 3 feet above the ground on Baco #1 root stock. This is one of the 2 such plants that survived the old weather of January 1974. If you look closely in the photograph you can see a bulge about the 36 in mark where the bud graft was made. If you have any other cold resistant varieties or clones I would be more than happy to try them in Northwest Missouri. Happy New Year. Sincerely,
