Pg 1 Aug 1st,1943 SW Pacific Island Dear Mom, Dad and NJ well today started a new month and with it came payday. I received the whole sum of $19.55. Don't know as yet where all my money goes. Maybe I will some day. Been rather busy today reading and writing however I did take off 5 minutes and won $2 in a craps game. Don't worry I don't do it often. Don't believe I told you about my buddies. One is a cpl and the other a pfc and they are always pulling their rank on me. Tis causes some rather heated arguments but it is all in fun. I believe they would do the same for them. They are 2 of the swellest fellows I know. I know you all would like them. We plan to
Pg 2 have a party after the war. Guess May will be the hostest and I will endeavor to be the host. Guess and Dad will have to help. Has May as yet gotten my watch? I am getting worried over it. It is really difficult trying to write with fellows trying to sing etc. Thanks for all the animal stamps. I'll try to write a regular letter every Sunday that I am able. Didn't get any mail today but I should get some tomorrow. At least I hope so. The fellows have all gone to chow but I decided to write to you. How do you like that. Don't ask me about the weather as I am unable to give it to you other than that the food it is nice and agrees with me.
Pg 3 That cold I told you about is better and I think I'll live to a ripe old age. Dad sorry to hear about your troubles setting materials. Don't worry this war will soon be over and you can get all you want. I hear they have stopped coffee rationing and sugar is next. Is that correct? If so, things there should get better. NJ did you have a nice time on your visit? Do you see Carl much? Still like him? Say what do you want for your birthday? Looks like time to day good night. Keep you chins up and I'll soon be home. PS kiss May and Norma Jean for me. Love and Kisses Donald
