Dear Dr. McDonald:
I regret it has taken me so long to respond to your letter of June 22nd and to give you a report on your 1972 Ruby Cabernet. In reality, I had misplaced your letter when I needed your address; just found it today.
I returned from Kansas City . . . with the three half-bottles intact, and later distributed one each to Professor Olmo and . . . Cook together with a copy of your letter. One late afternoon . . . ,I was able to get Dr. Olmo and . . Webb together to taste the bottle I had retained. . . Dr. Cook was not around.
Our reactions were that your 1972 Ruby Cabernet had a clean light fragrance though not a distinct . . aroma, which we usually easily recognize . . . from this variety. It reminded me . . . of a minor Bordeaux Chateau. We agreed that it had a clean . . taste, . . . light in body, and . . . excellent in view of the climate and region where grown.
Professor Olmo was particularly interested in the fact that you and others have found it more cold resistant than other Vitis vinifera varieties, . . . not a characteristic that we have much concern with here.
You are to be commended for the persistence you have had to exercise in maintaining your . . . vines . . through the vigors of Missouri winters and for the quality of your 1972 wine.
It was indeed a pleasure for me to come back to Kansas City for the Wine and Food Society wine tasting and I enjoyed our private discussion about wines . . . And thanks for your kind letter. . .
