A letter from Paul Wlos, Peotone, Il to Wilbur McDonald, M. D., it is not dated, but is in response to Dr. McDonald's letter to him of May 12, 1981. It is written on high quality paper.Context
Dear Wilbur:
Thank you for taking the time to send your remaining cuttings of Ruby Cabernet. I am excited to try my hand at grafting these and several other varieties on my Baco #1 vines.
Per your suggestion, I contacted Professor Olmo at the University of California at Davis. He provided order forms for cuttings from their F. P. M. S. College of Agriculture. In addition to your Ruby Cabernet, I now have cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. I realize that these are "long shots" for this climate, but I thought I would give hem a try for the sake of education.
I missed you at the recent grafting seminar in St. James. It was a very informative session given by Dr. . J. Allen of the University of California, Davis. He demonstrated the inverted T-bud graft method which I will be trying on my vines. They should be at the proper stage of growth is a week or possibly two. I will be grafting the buds at about 5' to 6' above the ground, retaining the complete Baco #1 trunk. I'll let you know how this works out.
Sincerely,
P. S. Have you met Dutton Biggs of the MIDI Vineyard, Ltd., Kansas City, MO? He is a firm advocate of French hybrids for red wines. He claims with proper blending, he can make red wines equivalent to the wines from vinifera varieties.Lexicon
