A letter from Erwin Abmeyer, Department of Horticulture, on Kansas State University, Manhattan, Ks. letterhead, to Dr. Wilbur P. McDonald, dated March 6, 1962.Context
Dear Dr. McDonald:
I ran across this description of the "Foch" grape in the "Register of New Fruit and Nut Varieties" in the American Society for Horticultural Science Proceedings, Volume 78. This list was compiled by Brooks and Olmo, of the University of California, Davis, California. I thought it might be of interest to you.
Marachal Foch (Foch) -
Originated at Oberlin Institute, Colmar, Alsace, France by Eugene Kuhlman. 101-14 x
Goldriesling, but some authors maintain it is derived from Oberlin 595 X Pinot noir;
tested as Kuhlman 188-2. Fruit: clusters loose, small, 8-10 cm. long, cylindrical, winged;
berry blue-black, very small, ripens very early. Wine: taste herbaceous; violet. Vine: very
vigorous, but poor productions; best adapted to difficult grape areas with short growing
season; does not produce much crop after spring frost.
While these authors do not rate the variety as highly as does the NY Fruit Testing Ass'n it will be interesting to see what it will do under our conditions. Also, to see what kind of a "finished product: it will make.
Sincerely,Lexicon
