Scope and Content

A copy of a letter, on onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D. to Mr. H. P. Olmo, Associate Professor Viticulture, University of California, Berkley, California, dated November 7, 1966. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the page.

Context

Dear Dr. Olmo: Thank you for your time Monday afternoon, the 19th of October when you tried to explain the niceties of viticulture to a Missourian. I had never seen such a wealth of grape varieties as I saw that afternoon, and all growing with such vigor. It made me a little sick. Here in Missouri I try so hard and have so little to show. That afternoon I was like a kid in a lollipop store. I am returning your pamphlet on Grapes from the Schroder Vineyard in Hutchison, Kans. because I do not feel that it is applicable to growing conditions in Missouri, or in Kansas. Really, Emmett H. Schroder, must have worn rose colored glasses all his life, . . . . His descriptions of . . . . are all exaggerated as far as my experience has been. This holds true also of . . . . while . . is a good looking grape, the dry wine leaves quite a bit to be desired. That is the sine I was telling you about with the aroma of a fresh cut apple, but has a very foxy after flavor. I am making place in my vineyard for the Ruby Cabornet vines for next spring, and for those grafted Phyloxera resistence roots in the spring of 68. Are you sure that you could not send along a few of your T 8-43 vines on resistence roots for me to try? On Tuesday, the 18th of October, the day following my visit to you, I drove south of San Francisco visiting the Almaden Vineyards, and Paul Masson. . . . talked Paul out of a riddling table . . . Now it will be easier for me to make sparkling wines, thus disguising some of my deficiencies. Thank you again for your kindness. Sincerely, you Sincerely,
