Correspondence between C. J. Alley and Dr. McDonald. A letter from C. J. Alley, Associate Specialist, University of California, Davis, Calif. to Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D. dated February 7, 1967. It is on the University of California letterhead.
And a copy of Dr. McDonald's letter of reply to Mr. Alley on February 17, 1967. This is on onion skin paper and the letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the page.Context
Dear Dr. McDonald:
I have your letter of February 1st stating you would like to obtain 6 rootings of Chardonnay and 20 graftsticks of Ruby Cabernet. Actually you should not need any more than 10 graftsticks of Ruby Cabernet for 10 stumps of Baco #. Unless I hear from you I will leave it at 10 graftsticks.
There is one source for sure of Ruby Cabernet on its own roots. This is the Gebhart Nursery, 250 South Fairbanks Avenue, Sanger, California. Mr. Gebhart has rootings available but he provides only a minimum of 50 rootings per order. Another possibility would be the Emmolo Nursery, Galleron Lane, St. Helena, California, who might have benchgrafted vines of Ruby Cabernet on either AxR #1 rootstock or Saint George rootstock.
At present the T8-43 has not been released so we can not provide any such material.
Yours truly,

Dear Mr. Alley:
Enclosed is a check payable to the Regents of the University of California for 6 rootings of Pinot Chardonnay @ $1.00 each, and 10 graft sticks of Ruby Cabernet at 25 cents each, plus a 50 cent packing charge. Will you please hold this material as late as you feel is possible before shipping it to me as I would like to have the graft sticks at a later state of development than the stumps of Baco #1 on which I intend to graft them. If you have this material in refrigeration then you had better ship by air express and I will continue the refrigeration until the latter part of April as which time the grafts will be made.
The Emmolo Nursery, St. Helena, Calif. will be contacted concerning the procurement of Ruby Cabernet on St. George rootstock.
Please keep me in mind when T8-43is released.
Sincerely,Lexicon
