Context

Dear Dr. McDonald: On October 24th we received an order from you for six rootings of Chardonnay and six of Ruby Cabernet. We can provide you with the rootings of Chardonnay but we do not have any rootings of Ruby Cabernet this year. We can provide you with cuttings of this variety of rootings in 1968. Please advise. Yours truly, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dear Mr. Alley: Thank you for your letter of Jan. 18th, although I am disappointed that you have no Ruby Cabernet rootings for this year. When I was talking to Dr. H. P. Olmo in October he thought he could send me six rootings of Ruby Cabernet this year, and stated that he would graft 10 rootings for me on disease resistant roots suitable for growth in Loess soil, which I could plant the spring of 1968. Along with the six Chardonnay rootings, would you send me about 20 cuttings of Ruby Cabernet, as I will attempt to graft them on 10 root stumps of Baco #1 . . . . The stalks are about 11/4 " in diameter and I may be able to split the stump and graft the Ruby Cabernet; . . . This may save a years time. The wine made from the Baco #1, as grown in Northwest Missouri was certainly not acceptable. If and when you put a name on T8-43, will you please send me 10 rootings on disease resistant roots, to try here in Loess soil in Northwest Missouri. Thank you for this service. Sincerely,
