Scope and Content

A copy of a letter on onion skin paper from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D. to Dr. James A. Cook, Dept. of Viticulture & Enology, Univ. of Calif., Davis, Calif. , dated July 7, 1967. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the page.

Context

Dear Dr. Cook: Enclosed are twenty air dried leaves of Delaware to be analyzed for fertilizer needs. There has been no addition of commercial fertilizer to this plot, but there has been two applications of rotted manure in the past ten years. Following our discussion last Oct. 17th, I returned home and put one tablespoon of Borax about each of the 140 vines. The Chardonnay rootings which were delivered in April, sprouted, then froze back, as the last of April we had two days of below freezing weather. . . . All of the grapes in my vineyard that have sprouted and started to leaf out froze back. Since then, five of the Chardonnays have not shown any further activity . . . one is putting out leaves and has a shoot about six inches in length. . . . 10 Baco #1 roots with Cabernet cuttings . . .also froze at the budding out stage; 8 of the 10 grafts did not take, one is now putting out a shoot about 6 " . . and the other took off like a striped ape; it is now about 4 ' in height and looks as good and healthy as any California grape should. . . . . Ten Ruby Cabernet rootings were obtained from the Boordy Vineyard in Riderwood, Maryland; three came through the frost and all are living to date. Now that I am a subscriber to the Journal of Enology, what are my chances of becoming a member of the American Society of Enologists, envy though I flunked grafting this year? Please let me know what my fertilization needs are and the charge for this service. Thank you much. Sincerely,
