Dear Mr. Bottermuller:
Wish to report on the Virginia Seedling roots and wood that you were so kind to let me have last fall. I was able to get four sections of roots from the rooted vine, and they were planted last fall. The wood cuttings I gave to a greenhouse friend of mine, . . . However, after about two months of leaves, most of them wilted and died, I then transplanted the live ones into the vineyard last week - and THERE WASN'T A ROOT ON THEM. Seems as if these . . . , just don't root very well - just like the books say. Anyway, the half dozen with leaves that I put in the vineyard last week, are still alive, so I have hopes.
The four rooted vines that I planted last winter, have not yet put out a sprout or bud. . . . These things seem hard to grow.
The Ives, Bullet, and Missouri Reisling cuttings all put out lots of roots and leaves, and are doing very well indeed.
Sorry to have missed "MAIFEST" this year, . . . Eleanor and I enjoyed it last year, . . . Did you play the fiddle again this year as usual?
Last year was not a good one for grapes in this area, and I was only able to put down three five gallon batches of wine. . . . It is clear and bright, and tastes fairly good. I'll bottle it before long.
Have you found a good supply of those old brown wine bottles yet. If you do, please keep me in mind. Also if I could ask another favor of you - would you put me down about 10 vines of Virginia Seedling to root for me. I think I cut up the one vine last fall into too many pieces - . . . I'll be driving to Columbia next fall . . . I'll come on over to Herman.
