A copy of a letter on onion skin paper from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D. to Dr. James A. Cook, Dept. of Viticulture & Enology, Univ. of Calif., Davis, Calif. , dated November 1, 1967. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the page.Context
Dear Dr. Cook:
On July 7, 1967 I mailed you twenty air dried leaves of Delaware to be analyzed for fertilizer needs, with an accompanying letter. The leaves must have been misplaces or the letter and package misent, as I have had no reply to date. I will send you another package next spring if you are willing.
Following my visit with you on Oct. 17, 1966, I returned to my vineyard and put a tablespoon of Borax about each of the vines. Further fertilization will await your suggestions.
Last spring I grafted Ruby cabernet on ten Baco #1 roots which then underwent two nights of freezing temperatures the last of April. Two of the grafts survived, however, and put out scions of 14 to 16 feet in length, along with a few bunches of grapes which reached a Balling of 22° before the birds got them. If these Ruby Cabernet grafting live through the winter, I think I am on to something.
There is another problem that I need help with, and that is the stunting of grapes that are replanted in my vineyard where I have removed the previous grapes. Should I allow the land to lie fallow for a year and how do I go about sterilizing the area. Any information along this line would be appreciated.
Sincerely,Lexicon
