A copy of a letter on onion skin paper from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Dr. James A. Cook, Professor of Viticulture, Davis, California, dated October 17,1969. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the paper.Context
Dear Dr. Cook:
Thank you for your kindness to my wife and me last Thursday afternoon, October 9th. There is no exposure to knowledgeable enologists in the Midwest, and I appreciate the chance for education. My beautiful red fall leaves on the Ruby Cabernet no longer look so beautiful.
The mechanical grape picker in action was a high spot, and I can see where Mr. Chavez is going to run all his grape pickers out of work just like John L. Lewis did his coal miners - what a pity!
Friday morning, Oct. 10th,you were not in your office so I had a short visit with Mr. Albert Koyama, who generously offered to take me out to the vineyards that afternoon. Since you were buy, however, I drove on sown to Livermore where I spent the afternoon following Karl Wente about as he bossed the process. Here again, I learned many things that cannot be learned from books. Karl was most kind.
After leaving Wente's I stopped by a roadside telephone stand and called Jim Howe in Walnut Creek, inviting him to dinner. Friday and Saturday his housekeeper was off so he was receptive. After tasting a few wines he had in the house, we had a good evening meal together. Jim knew all the scuttlebutt, and is still just as sharp as ever.
Is there list of Viniferas available comparing their winter hardiness? Is Ruby Cabernet more winter hardy than the Pinot Chardonnay, and would you consider the Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Aligoté, as being more winter hardy than the others? I understand that a grape called Sereksiya, a Russian Vinifera, is supposed to be winter hardy.
Thank again. Tell Dr. Omo not to forget me when the T8-43 are passed out.
