Dear Mr. Bottermuller:
As you will remember, I came to the "Maifest" in Hermann last may 19th ad 20th for the purpose of locating Virginia Seedling grape vines. I am starting a vineyard here in Missouri of 14 varieties of grapes that I feel will produce on this Loess soil. The idea of course is to make a varietal wine of each. This I am licensed to do.
You were so harrassed by being the gracious host and by "filling your public duties" that our conversation was rather hurried and hectic, however you did say that if I would come down this fall I could have some wood for grafting or growing, and also that you would try to put a clod on some good vines to root them for me during the summer.
My wife and I are going to be in Columbia, Mo. next Fri. and Sat., Nov. 8th and 10th, and I would like to pay a visit on Sat. morning, the 10th of Nov. Of course I will bring a few samples of my work.
If this is not convenient will you please let me know. I am looking forward to a visit with you.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Bottermuller:
I wish to thank you and Mrs. Bottermuller for the courtesies and kindness you extended me last Saturday. I thoroughly enjoyed myself during that time . . . Of course when I arrived back in Columbia my wife thought I had arrived just in time. The wine samples had put me in a very mellow mood so that I didn't mind her scolding because I was late.
The Virginia Seedling roots I was able to get four vines from and they have been planted in my vineyard. . . .All the wood I took over to a friend of mine who runs a greenhouse . . . then plant them and give them a early start. If it is possible for you to find a half dozen Virginia Seedling that are rooted . . . That will save in waiting for my grape crop to mature. I am a little impatient to make some of my own (wine).
I have been nipping along the last few evenings alternating between your Virginia Seedling and the Concord. I certainly like the Seedling better. The "Bullet" wine has a little Foxy after flavor. Could that grape be one of the Fox grapes, . . . ? The Concord of course is also a Fox grape.
I have two old brown wine bottles sitting on a shelf in my bar . . . If you have a chance to obtain many of those old bottles, . . . please keep me in mind. I will be glad to buy all you can obtain. . . . At present I scrounge old champagne bottles after weddings, . . . . Also I would enjoy another visit with you and my this year's wine would ne ready to sample.
Thanks again for your kindness.
Sincerely,
P. S. Tell Mrs. Bottermuller that the daughter of Mrs. Redding from Union Star was in the office today and remembered when the five ladies were in Herman and had such a wonderful time with Mrs. Bottermuller.Lexicon
