A copy of a two-page letter, on onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Mr. W. R. Martin, Extension Horticulturist, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo., dated April 24, 1962. The letters COPY in red ink are printed down the left hand side of the page.Context
Dear Mr. Martin:
Thank you for your letter of April 13th and for the information passed on by Victor Carothers. However, I have followed all the leads available and still have not been able to locate any Missouri Reisling or Cynthiana Grapes for planting this year. I did locate Elvira grapes and they have been planted in my new vineyard. I also have made some inquiries about the availability of Iona, but so far have not been able to locate them.
My grape growing started about 7 years ago when I moved . . . where I had room for planting a few grapes along the fence line. . . . I had not been particularly successful. This year I have obtained some adjacent ground . . . and have set out a vineyard capable of accepting 140 plants, 8' apart, . . . ; the rows 15' apart. . . . I have planted 10 vines each of . . . ; Steuben, Seibel 10868, Sheridan, Seibel 5279, . ., . ., . . ,. ., . . , . . I thus have vacancies left in which I would like to plant 10 each of the Missouri Reisling, Cynthiana, Iona, if available, and I have some cuttings of Delacatessen which I am rooting this year.
It is my purpose to try to make small 5 gallon batches of varietal wines from the different variety of grapes grown in Northwest Missouri on Loess soil . . the base soil on my property. . . . the wines vary, . . with the type of grape, . . the location, weather, etc. I hold the No. 2 Domestic Wine Production License in the state of Missouri and have my Federal Permit, . . . My wine making started in 1958 . . . and have had some successes and . . . failures. . . . , I am learning and it ids a rather pleasant task.
Paul Garrett's comments on the relative value of grapes is certainly interesting. . . .these grapes were not raised in Northwest Missouri, . . on Loess soil, so that the character of the wine may be entirely different.
Any further information that you might have along this line would be appreciated.
If you come across any information as to where I can obtain Missouri Reisling, Cynthiana or Iona Grapes, I certainly would appreciate that also.
Sincerely,Lexicon
