Scope and Content

Copy of a letter, onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Dr. Konstantin Frank, Director of Goldseal Vineyards, Hammondsport, New York. Dated Fe. 27, 1961. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the paper.

Context

Dear Dr. Frank: For the past five years I have been interested in Viticulture as a hobby here in St. Joseph, Mo and have been a member of the New York State Fruit Testing Cooperation Association trying to grow the hybredized European Grapes on loess soil with very little success. To date Baco #1 has put up good canes but after 4 years has produced no grapes; . . . Two Seyve-Villard 5-276 have survived out of a dozen planted, . . . None of the Siebel 1000 or 6880 have survived, but most of the Siebel 10868 . . . . have survived the winter, . . . Interlaken and Romulus Seedless have not been a success and I have not been able to grow the Golden Muskat, Schuyler, Ruby, and Yates. Recently, I understand that you have had success with the Pinot Chardonnay by grafting at least three feet above the ground. Maybe this will be the answer to our problem here in northwest Missouri. There are about a half a dozen good grape vines on my property and I have thought of grafting them but have not tried as yet. Could you, . . , be so kind as to advise me on this subject and . . .send me a small bunch of your acclimated Pinot bush so that I may attempt it. I would be more than happy to reimburse you for any expense involved. Sincerely,
