A letter from Emil Wepprich on Wepprich's Wine Gardens letterhead to Mrs. Wilbur McDonald, M. D., F. A. C. S., St. Joseph, Missouri, dated April 7, 1962Context
Dear Dr. McDonald,
Please excuse the delay in answering your letter of March 30, 1962. I have been trying to locate some of the pamphlets and literature I had in regards to raising grapes and various types suitable for this area. We discontinued raising grapes eight years ago. Since I gave a friend of mine these pamphlets etc. He passed away three years ago and his wife can't seem to find any of this material.
I don't know of anyone that raises the Missouri Riesling and Elvira grapes in this area. We used to buy these grapes from Augusta, Mo., but they too discontinued raising grapes in that area for the past eight years. We raised grapes also, and found that they do best on an east slope with plenty of drainage. They take a lot of care, because they are subject to black-rot and mildew. I wish I had the addresses of vineyards out east to pass along to you. I suggest you write Missouri University, Agricultural Experiment Station, Columbia, Mo. They give out helpful information in grape-growing. You may also try Boordy Vineyards, Riderwood, Maryland. They specialize in raising French hybrid and perhaps some of the others you mentioned.
We buy only the Concord grapes from Cuba, Mo. for making wine. No one seems to be interested in raising the other varieties, because there is no market for them and they are too shy-bearing. We handle imported wines and other American brands to give us variety for serving in our Wine-garden.
Since you are having some trouble in the results of your wine, I suggest you write the Avi Publishing C., New York, N. Y., and ask for Principles and Practive of Wine-Making and Laboratory Examination of Wines, by W. V. Cruess. This will be helpful to you, of course nothing replaces years of experience.
If at any time you should be in our vicinity-do drop in. I hope I have been of some help to you.
Sincerely,
P. S. - Yes Dr. Michael Wepprich is my brother and he is practicing in Washington, Mo.Lexicon
