Scope and Content

A copy of a letter, on onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Mr. I. C. Dobrow, Heublein Inc., New York, New York, dated June 14, 1971. The letters COPY in red ink are printed down the left hand side of the page.

Context

Dear Mr. Dobrow: After having failed completely in my mission to obtain some good drinking wine at the Premiere National Auction of Rare Wines held in San Francisco May 26, 1971, I now receive your letter of June 4th informing me that I had acquired Lt Number 274, a case of twelve bottles of Chambollo-Musigny Charmes, Vintage 1934 at #240.00. I would be glad to accept the (wine) . . . ,although overpriced, but I am afraid a successful bidder would be greatly disappointed. I am sure that in the near future someone will let you know that a mistake has been made, so you had better hold Lot 274 until the successful bidder makes himself known. I thoroughly enjoyed attending the Wine Auction and of being given the opportunity to taste so may fine wines. The crowd, however, was a little overwhelming, as were the prices brought at the Auction. I did bid on several Lots, but since I was buying for drinking pleasure, and not for prestige, I could not compete successfully with the crowd assembled. Remember, you asked me how I made out as I was leaving immediately after the Auction so that I could catch my plane home, and I gave you the bad news then. I was outbid on everything that I wanted. My number was 325. Will you please recheck your records and see if you can find the error so that no one will be disappointed. Thank you again for your courtesy and kindness. Sincerely,
