Scope and Content

A copy of a letter on onion skin paper from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Mr. R. A. Schroeder, Chairman of Dept. of Horticulture, Columbia, Missouri, dated March 6, 1973. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the paper.

Context

Dear Mr. Schroeder: Yes, I do remember meeting Art Gaus and another gentleman at Fred Hunt's place, east of town, but I evidently was not paying attention and did not place the name. It will be a pleasure to visit with you and Art, whenever you come to St. Joseph. Here in Northwest Missouri I feel that I am fighting a loosing battle, but doggonit, if I were 200 miles South the result would be different. Six years ago I grafted Ruby Cabernet on Bacon #1 roots, about 2-3 feet above the ground, and protected them in the winter by laying them down. This past fall I obtained sufficient grapes for the first time to make a 5 gallon batch of varietal wine. This winter I did not lay them down to see if they could stand the weather on their own. As of now I do not feel very optimistic, and will have to wait another month or longer before I will now whether or not they survived. This spring I am planting 6 cuttings of "T8-43", and 6 cuttings of Serelsia, a Russian vinifera, both os which were obtained from the University of California at Davis, for a try here in Northwest Missouri. Sincerely
